Meet Our People
It is said that a journey starts with a single step, but not everyone takes the same path. At Matheson we are proud to have people from a myriad of backgrounds who are at different stages in their careers.
We continually invest in our people - from our graduate programme, to our ongoing in-house learning and development programmes - helping each other along our chosen paths
Below, you can read a little about some of our people and get an idea of the different journeys they have taken to get here.
Meet Michael Jackson | Managing Partner
I joined Matheson over 25 years ago as a trainee and qualified into the Corporate Department before moving to our Financial Services Department. Matheson arranged placements for me in a US law firm and in a financial institution in London.
I was head of our Asset Management practice before becoming Managing Partner in 2016. We truly are a global community with five partner led offices in Dublin, London, New York, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
Our firm is dedicated to providing an excellent service to leading global companies. At Matheson, we recognise diversity of talent and the importance to succeed and flourish. By joining Matheson, you'll be joining a community of the best business lawyers. We have designed a leading bespoke trainee development programme for you so that you can be your best.
Meet Tara Doyle | Partner
I joined Matheson as a trainee in 1994 and became a partner in January 2002 before being appointed head of our Asset Management group in 2016.
I chair the Graduate Trainee Development Committee, which is a committee of partners with responsibility for the ongoing training and education of our trainees and lawyers.
As a firm, we believe that talented people with relevant expertise are the surest route to success. We invest more in the training and development of our people than any other Irish law firm and will continue to do so to further our success.
Meet April McClements | Partner
I was lucky in that I knew from very early on that I wanted to study law. I chose UCD because as well as being an excellent law school, it was renowned for its exchange programme at that time and I was keen to spend a year abroad. I studied law in UCD (BCL International) and spent a year as part of my degree in Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.
As a trainee, it was very exciting to work on high-profile cases with top-class clients and to get to observe lawyers who are at the top of their field in action. You are very much a part of the team and become completely immersed in the particular case or transaction.
There is a very strong support network in the firm. At all levels of the firm, there is a huge focus on training and development. As a trainee, you are really given the opportunity to realise your full potential and to become equipped with every skill required to make the transition from trainee to solicitor and ultimately to partner. There is also huge support at an informal level and the team spirit of the firm is very much evident, people are always willing to answer questions and help out, no matter how busy they are. There is also a very strong focus on mentoring in the firm, and as a trainee and as a solicitor, I was fortunate to work very closely with and to learn directly from partners and associates who were leading lawyers in their fields and personally invested a lot of time in my training.
It was a fantastic sense of achievement and pride to become a partner in Matheson having trained in the firm. I grew up with the firm to a certain extent and Matheson has really invested in my career and personal development. There is a strong focus in the firm on not only training our trainees to be excellent lawyers but looking past qualification and developing the partners of the future.
Having had the experience of training in Matheson, I can really relate to our trainees and understand the importance of this stage of their career. Having come up through the firm and worked with partners who were fantastic mentors and invested their time in me, mentoring junior members of the team and assisting them in their personal development is really important to me.
The investment that I have made in my career by choosing the right course and law firm, the investment that the firm has made in the development of my career since the day I joined as a trainee and the mentors that I had along the way, have allowed me to develop the key skills required to become a partner and have got me to where I am today. It is very important to me to make this same investment in trainees who join the firm and help them to reach their full career potential.
Meet Philip Tully | Partner
I have been a practising solicitor for six years and a chartered tax advisor with the AITI for the past five years. I joined the firm initially as a summer intern and experienced first-hand what life would be like as a trainee. My first experience of training with Matheson was during that four-week internship where expert coaches were brought in to give us seminars on interview skills, presentations skills and legal research skills.
I successfully obtained a training contract with the firm and during my time as a trainee I also received further training in legal drafting, finance and business know-how for lawyers and group project work. These training sessions were in addition to the support provided by Matheson to facilitate my external training with the Law Society of Ireland and the Irish Tax Institute, both financially and in terms of study leave.
I felt the learning curve was very steep in my first few months. However, thanks to all the training and support offered to me in Matheson as a newly qualified solicitor, it wasn’t long before I started to become more and more confident in my work. Looking back on the years since I qualified as a solicitor, it seems like each year has brought just as many opportunities to learn and gain experience and equally as many novel tax issues to understand and overcome.
The highlight of my training was developing really close relationships with those training and working around me. As a result of all the various group training sessions, team projects (…and nights out) the trainees in Matheson build a really close bond. This close network of friends means that there are always colleagues in the Tax department and elsewhere throughout the firm that I can use as a sounding board to bounce ideas and questions off.
